And often times, I’ll tell you about stuff like that in the Weekender, but I really feel like those products need their own spotlight, and Smart Cookie Shopping is just the place for it!

So now, let’s take a trip from Smart Cookie straight through the grocery store doors. What goodies can you get on your next trip? Continue reading

Wegmans Wonders: March 2013

Psst…Don’t forget! Today is the LAST day to enter my Giveaway! Wegmans March 2013

We are long overdue for a trip to Wegmans.

As you Smart Cookie regulars know, Mother Cookie and I make the trek to our nearest Wegman’s in Syracuse every month or so to stock up on the wondrous goodies we can’t get at any regular grocery store. Then, I give you the dish on the awesome products I discovered. The last Wegmans Wonders post was in December! You guys must be going through Wegmans withdrawal; I know I sure was.

If you’ve never been to Wegmans, it’s basically a foodie’s utopia, a grocery store on steroids. If you consider yourself a food lover, then you’ve got to make it a point to check one out. But for now, you can live vicariously through my purchases from this trip.

Let’s start at the Patisserie. When you think of your grocery’s store bakery, you probably think “sub par.” I know my local grocery store’s bakery is incomparable to a real independent bakery. Well, shake what you know about grocery store bakeries out of your mind. Wegmans patisserie is like stepping out of the store and into a quality, family-run bakery in Europe. Everything is handmade and amazing. Just look at this array of intricate cupcakes!photo(15)

I was tempted to buy one (or 12) but there were so many other treats to try, like these Mint Chocolate Brownie Pops. They’re like cake pops, but with brownies. How could I resist?DSC_2869

The balance of mint-chocolate flavor here was perfection, and they were wonderfully rich. However, I expected the filling to be moister and fudgier, especially since these are BROWNIE pops. But they were still delicious, a fun and festive treat.DSC_2882

Then, I grabbed this Chocolate Decadence. After devouring the entire dark and chocolaty confection, I still can’t tell you exactly what it was. The texture was a cross between creamy mousse and cake, topped with chocolate ganache. Whatever it was, it was dreamy and delicious. I could eat six of these.DSC_2921

My parents sampled these adorable Chocolate Cappuccino Cups. And of course, I tried a couple spoonfuls. That’s a pure chocolate cup, which is not only pretty, but delicious. It’s rather Willy Wonka-esque. It’s filled with cappuccino mousse, chocolate mousse, and chocolate cake, all of which equates to absolute heaven. I would’ve taken a photo of the cross-section for you if I had any idea all of that was going in that little cup before I dug in.DSC_2904

Then of course, I picked up a few of my absolute favorite sugar cookies that I rave about in every Wegmans Wonders post. I’ll spare you another lovefest; just know these are the best sugar cookies on the planet, featuring fun festive shapes for every holiday and season. You’ve got to try ‘em.DSC_2934

Out of the bakery and into the produce. Check out these Peewee Potatoes! They’re no bigger than my thumb, and they’re easily the cutest potatoes on the planet. I can’t wait to cook with them.DSC_2985-2

Now into the inner aisles. Wegmans has an extensive assortment of tea, which is great since I drink the stuff almost every day. I grabbed this Rasberry Passion Yogi tea, and it’s wonderful. It smells intoxicating when it’s steeping.DSC_2975-2

Now, feast your eyes on the best Caramel and Chocolate sauces you can buy. This stuff tastes so heavenly and high-quality that Smuckers and all those other sad brands can’t compare. The chocolate sauce tastes like an upgraded version of classic fudge sauce; it’s thick like ganache and made with good chocolate. And the caramel sauce is the equivalent of liquified Werther’s Originals. DSC_2973

I grabbed one of my favorite soups, a Vegetable Soup made by Wegmans that’s delicious and healthy, and I grabbed a new one to try: Potato Quinoa and Spinach. Doesn’t that sound incredible? I haven’t tried it yet, but I have high hopes. Only 100 calories per cup!DSC_2959

These aren’t unique to Wegmans, but I wanted to show you anyway: The Birthday Cake Oreos are back to celebrate Oreo’s 101st B-day, so I grabbed the Golden Oreo variety. They are so addicting. I’ve devoured half the package already.DSC_2997

I gave Powdered Peanut Butter a try for the first time. It has 45-calories and 85% less fat for two tablespoons as opposed to 200 calories for two tablespoon of regular peanut butter. You just add water, and bam, instant PB. It doesn’t taste exactly like regular peanut butter, but it’s really good. I’ve been mixing it into things like sugar-free hot chocolate and Cool Whip. Yum!DSC_2981-2

And lastly, here are some non-food items since Wegmans has a ton of inedible wonders as well. I picked up a pair of yoga socks and Essie nail polish. Both are awesome. I used the prety polish to pain my robin’s egg nails this weekend. DSC_3011 DSC_3165

Phew! That’s everything for this Wegmans round-up.

Have you been to a Wegmans? What are you favorite finds?

The Weekender: My 1st Giveaway, Wegmans, & Cat Antics

31013-2

This week, we had a Smart Cookie first: a giveaway! In honor of Extra Gum’s Simple Swaps campaign, they provided me with a tote bag full of their assorted gum flavors, a notebook for keeping track of your simple swaps, and a $40 giftcard to Whole Foods. If you missed that boat, never fear. The giveaway is still going on. You have until Friday, March 15 to enter, so get on it! The winner will be announced in next week’s Weekender.

Along with my first ever giveaway, there was also a slew of mouthwatering recipes on Smart Cookie this week. You might have missed a bite or two, but that’s okay; I’ve got you covered.

Let’s review, shall we?

  1. Bunny Butt Peanut Butter Pretzel BitesDSC_2323
  2. Spinach-Artichoke CalzoneDSC_1155-2
  3. Super-Sized Sausage & Pepper CalzoneDSC_1224
  4. Stuffed Mediterranean Eggplant + a GIVEAWAYDSC_2751
  5. Fluffernutter Oatmeal BallsDSC_2650

Which recipe of the week was your favorite? I think I have to go with those Bunny Butt Pretzel Bites. They’re just too cute! Not to mention, they’re super easy to make. You can catch a step-by-step tutorial in this week’s brand new video!

Now, what’s on the plate for next week? I’ve got some special treats for you! Monday will bring the most delicious twist on a mozzarella stick you’ve ever seen. And on Tuesday, we’re taking a trip to Wegmans to see all the goodies I found this month. Spoiler alert: there’s brownie pops, chocolate, yoga socks, and more!DSC_2545

You guys might recall a few Weekenders ago I exposed the cat conspiracy going on behind the scenes while I’m trying to photograph. This week, while I was trying to take pictures of my smorgasbord of Wegmans finds, Mr. Poe was an especially annoying pain in the butt.DSC_2977DSC_2981

But he’s just so darn cute!

DSC_2969DSC_2986

And in other news, I got my hair dyed: subtle red & violet lowlights. Do you ever experiment with hair color?DSC_2853

The Weekender is great for catching up, but you don’t have to ever miss a bite during the week. Just like me on Facebook and follow me on Twitter to stay up-to-date! You can also follow me on Pinterest and subscribe to my Youtube channel. That should be enough to satisfy your Smart Cookie craving!

Tell me about the good stuff you ate this week. What was your favorite meal?

See you on Monday!

Wegmans Wonders: Christmas Edition!

wegmanswonders

You know that list of things you have to get done before Christmas, like buying presents, baking cookies, and decorating the tree? Well, on my pre-xmas to-do list, I have to make sure to fit in a trip to Wegmans. You guys know I take regular trips about every two months or so as it is, but going around Christmastime is a must. They have so many fun and festive holiday goodies that it’ll make your head spin.

Mother Cookie and I made the trek, and as always, we made out well. Every inch of Weggies was decked out with holiday decor or stocked up with festive foods. They even had a whole section devoted  to Christmas gifts. Now, if you’ve never been to Weggies, then you might think that’s weird. Who buys good Xmas gifts at a grocery store, right?

WRONG.

Wegmans is not just a grocery store; it’s an everything-food-related UPTOPIA, complete with a fantastic restaurant, made-to-order-food, a beautiful patisserie, bakery, floral shop, and they sell groceries too. So naturally, they had an array of awesome gifts for the holidays.

Mother Cookie and I picked up these two adorable ornaments;. Yess, they have an extensive ornament collection. _DSC7363Can you guess which one I picked out?_DSC7378In case you didn’t know, I’m obsessed with penguins, and the only thing better than a penguin is a penguin riding a polar bear.

Mother Cookie picked out this cute little Santa.

_DSC7382

Since it’s Christmastime, that means Weggies had their out-of-this-world, sublime sugar cookies dressed accordingly. I grabbed two because one just ain’t enough. Those of you who’ve read my Weggies posts before must be like, “Seriously? When is she going to shut up about those flippin’ sugar cookies?” The answer is never because they’re the best sugar cookies on the planet, period. I dream of the day that Weggies gives me the recipe for their heavenly icing that tastes like it was made by angels.

_DSC7041

Speaking of cookies, I picked up a bag of these mini red & green M&M’s for my Christmas cookie baking. I was  pumped to stumble upon these since not only are mini M&M’s hard to come by, but they’re red & green ones nonetheless. I love coming across rare baking finds like that; I feel like a hunter in the jungle who found a rare, coveted species.

_DSC7389

That is only the beginning of holiday sweets at Weggies. Their patisserie is stocked with festive treats, including some gorgeous Christmas tree and Santa Claus cupcakes. They also had this seasonal Italian Rum Cake, which was so pretty I just had to try it.

_DSC6973

This isn’t something I’d typically go for because I HATE alcohol in food. It tastes horrible; why would you want it in your cake? Still, I gave it a shot. Leave it to Wegmans to make an alcohol-soaked cake that’s DELICIOUS. It was light yet so very moist and tasty. That whipped cream frosting was just perfect. Plus, it was stuffed with layers of vanilla and chocolate filling.

_DSC7001

Now, if you don’t want to expend several hundred calories to get your sweet tooth fix, then give holiday-flavored tea a try. It’s zero calories, but fun and festive. I had a hard time picking; there was sugarplum, gingerbread, and more. In the end I picked up Sugar Cookie Sleigh Ride. It really does smell like sugar cookies when you brew it. Freaky! I’m sure you can get this at any grocery store, not just Wegmans.

_DSC7416

I also snagged this Raspberry Earl tea. Its flavor is very subtle, but it gives me a great boost in the morning!

_DSC7417

While we’re being all healthy with our tea, let’s talk about these VitaPizzas. I embarrassingly squealed like a 2 year old when I spotted them. You’ve heard me rave about VitaMuffins in the past. They’re the greatest 100-calories spent EVER. So when I saw the same company came out with a pizza, I couldn’t wait to try it. Of course, my crappy grocery store didn’t have them, but Weggies does! _DSC7436

These babies are only 190 calories. That’s crazy talk! I had one for dinner tonight, and it was delicious. I couldn’t believe I got the whole thing for under 200 cals, plus it’s packed with fiber and protein. Double win!

Let’s be unhealthy now and talk about the greatest product discovery I’ve made this year: Wegmans Mac & Cheese Ravioli._DSC7448

This is the 3rd time I’ve flipped out over the stuff, and those of you who don’t have a Wegmans must hate me. I’m sorry; they’re just so good, and the world needs to know! It’s like inside out mac & cheese. They’re INCREDIBLE eaten on their own, but you can also serve them in all kinds of sauces or deep fry ‘em. You see what that bag says? “Club pack.” That means it’s jumbo sized, or in other words, Smart Cookie sized.

Speaking of stuffed pasta, Weggies makes wonderful pierogies in a myriad of flavors like Onion, Roasted Garlic, Spinach & Feta, Whole Wheat, Yellow Cheddar, and more. You can pick them up in the freezer section. I love to fry them up golden brown. Mmm, I’m salivating just thinking about it. _DSC7451

And lastly, I picked up these adorable Spinach & Artichoke Tortilla Crisps. It’s like Spinach & Artichoke Dip without the hassle of dipping!_DSC7461

Well folks, that’s all I’ve got for this edition of Wegmans Wonders. Have you ever been to Wegmans? What are your favorite things to buy?

Wegmans Wonders: October

It’s been far too long since my last trip to Wegmans. After seven days of hell last week, I figured a trip to Weggies was just what I needed to cheer me up. Is there really a better retreat from harsh reality than Heaven’s grocery store?

Of course not!

As usual, I garnered boatloads of goodies on my trip, and of course I’m going to share them with you. You know I’d never go to Weggie’s without divulging my plunder. Most of us aren’t fortunate enough to have a Wegmans nearby (even I have to drive 45 minutes). So hopefully, in sharing my spoils, you can get a small taste of the world’s greatest grocery store. And that is no hyperbole, my friends; Wegmans is food nirvana.

Walk in, and you’re instantly overwhelmed by the myriad of sights, sounds, and smells. The produce section is more like a sprawling garden of Eden, complete with every color and kind of veggie/fruit you could dream of. There’s a whole section of the store that combines a made-to-order food court, an endless buffet with any food you crave, and an array of ready-to-cook dishes to take home. The bakery, my favorite spot, has a plethora of pastries, cookies, cakes, and more; treats just as high-quality as if you plucked them straight from a patisserie in Europe. Beyond these specialty sections are the aisles and aisles of your typical grocery store items, plus a million more unique products you won’t find anywhere else. And you know how the store brand is typically a sub par, not-as-good version of the name brand? Wegmans defies that; their store brand is consistently incredible.

Okay, enough of my grocery store gushing. On to the food!

  1. Huge packs of peeled & chopped butternut squash
If you’re a squash fan, then you know how awesome this is. Butternut squash is the biggest pain in the you-know-what to peel and chop. In fact, you’re lucky to have all your fingers still intact after all is said and done. Now, I can get pre-peeled and chopped squash at my grocery store, but only in tiny packages which sell out easily. Wegman’s has these jumbo packs, and tons of ‘em, so you can enjoy all the squash you want.
  2. Hello Kitty Cupcakes
Since I’m 19 years-old, I’m slightly embarrassed to admit my borderline obsession with all things Hello Kitty. When I saw these adorable HK cupcakes in the Wegmans bakery, I might as well have been 5 years-old with the way I squealed. They have a ton of other amazingly decorated cupcakes. And the best part is, they’re not just pretty; they’re DELICIOUS too!
  3. Blueberry Cinnamon CocoPop
I’ve talked about CocoPop before. It’s like the cousin of rice cakes, except lighter, thinner, bigger in radius, and only 16 calories. Until recently, they only had the original flavor, but now they’ve got these new Blueberry Cinnamon ones. However, when I tried one, I was disappointed. The flavor is pretty subtle, not sweet at all, and the only thing I can imagine pairing well with it is cream cheese.
    And I hate cream cheese.
  4. Halloween Sugar Cookies
You must know by now how AMAZING these cookies are; I rave about them every single time I go to Weggies! They’re hands-down the best sugar cookies to ever grace my lips. So delicious, and the frosting is to die for. I just can’t get enough.
  5. Mixed Baby Squash
Seriously, how cute are these? It’s assorted squash the size of my finger! Definitely a fall must-have.

Wegmans Wonders: July

Guess who went to Wegmans on Friday?

This Smart Cookie right here!

If you know anything about me at all, then you should be well aware that I have an all-consuming adoration for Weggies. There is no grocery store on the planet superior to that place. In fact, I don’t even think you can even classify Wegmans as a grocery store, because it’s so much greater than that.

Unfortunately, I don’t have a Wegmans close to home (as is the case with everything good in the world when it comes to CNY). I live in such a deprived area! In fact, I heard someone say the other day, and I quote, “Price Chopper is like Wegmans.” I nearly fell out of my chair. I don’t know if you’ve ever been to a Price Chopper but there is no drug on the planet strong enough to ever make me believe it is comparable to Wegmans. How dare he/she say such a thing!

Anyway, My nearest Weggies is a good 45-minute drive, but Mother Cookie and I are such devoted customers/cult-followers that we make the trek every couple of months or so. We bring a cooler and stock up on all our favorites. Basically, taking me to Wegmans is like taking a kid to a theme park. It’s foodie heaven.

Allow me to share with you my discoveries from my latest visit to Wegmans:

  1. Butterfly Cupcakes
Wegmans is getting really fancy with their cupcakes lately! The past few times I’ve stopped in, I’ve seen them creating more and more whimsical little cakes. When I was there around Easter, they had bunnies and ducks. At Valentine’s Day, they had ladybugs. Now, they have these beautiful butterfly cupcakes, as well as ones shaped like Angry Birds. So cute! What I really love about them is that the decor is made from pure frosting, no gross fondant or other so-called-edible decorations. That means they’re beyond delicious. The cake is so tender and moist; the frosting is to die for!
  2. Mac & Cheese Ravioli
I lost my you-know-what when I saw these. I might as well be 5 years-old. Raviolis flavored like mac & cheese? Somebody hold me up; I might faint. They’re basically little raviolis stuffed with a cheddar cheese filling. Think inside-out mac & cheese. I have some deliciously sinful plans for these babies…
  3. S’mores Snack Mix
Why have I never seen this before? Little pieces of graham cracker (which taste & look suspiciously similar to Golden Grahams), gooey marshmallows, and chocolate all in one convenient snack mix. It’s the flavors of s’mores in the palm of your hand! I made the mistake of opening the bag, and now I’m addicted.
  4. Reuseable Shopping Bags
These are nothing new, but I’ve had my eyes on them for a long time. Buying reusuable bags is such an easy, inexpensive way to help the planet. Plus, the ones at Wegmans are so pretty!
  5. Coconut Cake
Wegmans’ bakery & pastry case is heaven on Earth for anyone with a sweet tooth, and this cake did magical things to my taste buds. The frosting is infused with coconut flavor and made with fresh vanilla beans. It’s smooth, fluffy, and just pure bliss. An extra coating of shredded coconut amps up the coconutty goodness. But that white cake itself…my god, it’s incredible. I would sell my soul to get that recipe. I could’ve eaten it without frosting, it was that delicious: SO moist, plus it had a tender crumb and remarkable flavor. Mmm.
  6. Wegman’s Perfect Sugar Cookies
I have raved about Wegmans’ sugar cookies multiple times now, and I’m about to do it again. Their flavor is just perfect, and their texture combines the best of both crisp and chewy worlds. But the best part is the frosting. It’s stiff to the touch, and yet it melts away like magic the second it hits your tongue. It’s incredible, quite possible the best I’ve ever had. Plus, Weggies is always churning out different shapes to match the season!
  7. Zhena’s Gypsy Tea in Coconut Chai and Hazelnut Chai
I love this tea. It comes in tons of exotic flavors, all of which are delicious. I just tried the coconut, and it’s wonderful. The flavor is not overbearing; it’s just right.
  8. Berry Pistachio Blend Nuts
With white chocolate, almonds, pistachios, cashews, dried cranberries, and dried cherries, this nut blend is packed with amazing things! I’m baffled that so many incredible components can be stuffed into one jar.
  9. Dulce de Leche
I haven’t gotten to try this, but I’m just thrilled Wegman’s carries it. Not a single grocery store in my area has dulce de leche.

Have you been to Wegman’s? What are your favorite treats to pick up?

The Weekender: Wegman’s, Wrap-Up, & Whoops!

This week, I had you guys eating good. We had some seriously indulgent Almond Joy Fudge, but we balanced it out with a low-cal Mini Broccolini Ricotta Frittata. That makes it okay, right? In case you need a refresher on all of the tasty bites we took at Smart Cookie…

Let’s Review, Shall We?

  1. Almond Joy Fudge
Super creamy, rich, and no candy thermometer required!
  2. Chickpea, Spinach, & Feta Marinara with Penne
Nutritious & delicious, this is a major step-up from boring spaghetti and marinara.
  3. Mini Broccolini Ricotta Frittata
Personal-sized, packed with ricotta cheese, and under 200 calories!
  4. Gooey Reese’s Banana S’mores Bars
This takes classic s’mores over the top by bringing together chocolate, PB, and banana.
  5. Skillet Pizza Monkey Bread
Finger-lickin’ good pizza monkey bread topped with gobs of cheese & baked in a skillet.

Plus, I dished out a brand new video to show you how to make that easy & decadent Almond Joy Fudge. In case you missed it, check it out below! And if you subscribe to my Youtube channel, you’ll get to watch my new videos a day before everybody else! That’s like a backstage pass. I’m so good to you guys.

However, I have to admit that I lied in last week’s edition of The Weekender. In my defense, I didn’t do it intentionally. You see, ever since I introduced you to the stray cat that hangs out around my house, I told you it was a female. As it turns out, I made a bit of a miscalculation. The cat has…man parts. And thus,I would like to properly re-introduce you to my new best friend: Thor.

I chose the name partly because I love the Avengers and partly because he just looks like a Thor. My progress with getting him to warm up to me has been slow, but I’ve been making progress all the same! He’s at the house almost all day, everyday. Thor is practically a member of the Smart Cookie Family.

Speaking of members of the Smart Cookie Family, my mother took me for our annual Wegman’s trip this past Friday. I picked up all kinds of delicious goodies. Of course, I grabbed one of my favorite sugar cookies. This one was shaped like a turtle!

I also finally got around to picking up some of their reusable shopping bags. I’ve been meaning to buy some for forever now. But more on that and all the other awesome eats I uncovered at Wegman’s coming this week!

In the meantime, be ready for a brand new video on Tuesday.

See you guys then!

Wegmans Finds: April 2012

Smart Cookie made the bi-monthly trek to Wegmans last weekend. I was in need of Weggie’s always amazing products and, as usual, I encountered a gold mine. Here are a few of my favorite edible treasures available at Wegmans right now.

  1. Biscoff Spread
Yes, I FINALLY bought some. Talk about being behind in the Blogisphere. Biscoff Spread has exploded in the blogger world, creating buzz amongst foodies everywhere. Believe me, I would’ve tried it eons ago if my sub-par local grocery stores carried it. Luckily, Weggies has me covered.
For those of you living in antiquated areas like my own where one cannot purchase anything good in the world, Biscoff is a spread with the consistency of peanut butter made from ground Biscoff cookies. In lament’s terms, that means: IT’S FREAKIN’ AWESOME. Excuse my lack of restraint; I get really excited over my food obsessions. Its flavor reminds me of gingersnaps, only way better. Plus, the Crunchy variety that I bought has bits of caramelized cookies, as opposed to the Creamy which is entirely smooth. I’m sorry it took me so long to get on the Biscoff bandwagon!
  2. Cleaned & Cut Kale
Yes, that’s right; this kale is cut AND cleaned already, which means no work for you! This is especially exciting if you’re a kale fiend like myself. I’ve been on a kale kick lately; I just can’t get enough of the stuff. This Cleaned & Cut Kale from Wegman’s is so convenient. I can just pull it out of the bag and get cooking; no fuss, no muss!

Wegman’s Finds: Valentine’s Day Treats & More

If you are blessed enough to live near a Wegman’s, then you know just how truly magical the place can be. The moment you walk through the doors, you are greeted by a wonderland of sublime grocery goods and more. Wegman’s doesn’t just sell food, they sell the best food. Everything that comes out of that place is amazing. Moreover, they sell a plethora of other goodies like gifts, kitchen equipment, home decor, and more.

Basically, they have everything.

I made my bi-monthly trek yesterday. It was actually an impromptu trip because I happened to be in the area. I was only going to grab a few things, but what I found were treasures galore.

Wegman’s was ready for Valentine’s Day. They had a whole section of the store devoted to all things red, pink, and chocolate. Any kind of candy your sweet tooth could desire, they had it. Loving teddy bears and various plushies? They had those too. They even had an entire floral shop to buy flowers for your sweetie. However, what I really enjoyed was all of the romantic-themed eats and treats.

1. Love Bug Cupcakes

These may be the cutest cupcakes in existence. Your choice of chocolate or vanilla cupcake is topped with mounds of fluffy frosting to uncannily resemble a cute little lady bug (or, in the spirit of Valentine’s Day, a love bug). Two mini chocolate curls act as edible antlers and amp up the adorableness. The best part is, unlike most elaborately decorated cakes and cupcakes, the love bug itself is all frosting, no chewy fondant or other edible but undesirable medium. So, like all of Wegman’s baked goods, these cupcakes taste amazing. They’re delicious AND cute as a bug!

Judgement Time: Wegman’s Tiramisu

You know what’s awesome?

Tiramisu.

You know what else is awesome?

Wegman’s.

If you’ve never experienced either, then you haven’t experienced life itself. Tiramisu is one fantastic, heavenly dessert. Its layered structure, consisting of sweet, fluffy cream and espresso-soaked ladyfingers is only bettered by a dusting of cocoa powder or sprinkling of chocolate shavings. It is creamy, dreamy, and decadent, but also light and heavenly. But could Wegman’s do it right?
